The Friends of NELHA is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting education
and outreach programs at NELHA. Friends of NELHA (FON) has established an Ambassador Program
consisting of local resident volunteers who provide enthusiastic and informative presentations to visitors with the goal of educating the public about the resources unique to NELHA and the technological applications being conducted by tenants. For more information, go to Education and Outreach.
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS HUMPBACK WHALE NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was
designated by Congress in 1992 to protect humpback whales and their
habitat in Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands are home to the only known
mating and calving grounds for the endangered humpback whale in the
United States. Protection of this important ecological habitat is
necessary for the long-term recovery of the North Pacific humpback whale
population. The Sanctuary is managed by a joint partnership between
NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program and the State of Hawaii.

West Hawaii Explorations Academy - PCS (WHEA), a public charter school, offers innovative full-immersion learning for secondary students based on student-run projects. WHEA won the Intel 2005 Schools of Distinction Science Award in competition with over 3,000 high schools nationwide.
